On 21st September 2010, Sri. T.S. Nagabharana Film Director, winner of many International, National and State Awards and Member of the Jury of the National Film Awards visited Belgaum.  He took part in a wide range of activities in a single day before leaving for Bangalore in the evening:

National Award Winning Director, Sri. T.S. Nagabharana to inaugurate Children Film Club on Tuesday, 21st September

Winner of 8 National Awards, 14 State Awards and Chairman, Karnataka Chitrakala Academy,  Sri. T.S. Nagabharana  will  inaugurate Children Film Club at Dnyan Prabodhan School,  Belgaum on Tuesday, 21st September 2010 at 11.00 am. Sri. Nagabharana is known for Kannada film classics like Janumada Jodi, Nagamandala, Mysore Mallige and Sant Sishunala Sharifa.

 
The Children Film Club is a joint initiative of  Ajanta Film Society, Belgaum and Dnyan Prabodhan School, Belgaum.

Film Appreciation Workshops on 3rd September 2010

Noted film critic and film festival jurist Shri H. N. Narahari Rao will be in Belgaum on Friday, September 3, 2010. Ajanta Film Society is felicitating him on his recent election as President of the prestigious Federation of Film Societies of India (FFSI) to succeed the outgoing President of FFSI, Shri Shyam Benegal.

On the same day (3rd September 2010), Shri Rao will hold a three hour Film Appreciation Workshop for students of RPD College at 10:00 am, followed by another workshop for students of Lingraj College at 2:30 pm.  These unique workshops will utilize film clips, handouts and interactive discussions to bring alive various aspects of filmmaking and their appreciation.  You are invited to attend the Workshop.

May 2010: Panel Discussions on Mane, Jogwa, and Amanush

Panel discussions on three classic Indian films were held during May 2010 :  ಮನೆ  (Kannada -29-05-2010), जोगवा  (Marathi-30-05-2010), and अमानुष  (Hindi- 31-05-2010).
Mane

Mane (The Dwelling) directed by Girish Kasaravalli and starring Naseeruddin Shah and Deepti Naval won the following Awards:
National Award for Best Feature Film in Kannada, 1990 / National Award for Best Film on Social Issues / Indian Panorama, 1990 / Sydney Film Festival, 1991 / London Film Festival, 1991 / Fukuoka Film Festival, 1999
Jogwa
Jogwa - The Awakening is a National Film Award winning 2009 Marathi film directed by Rajiv Patil. It stars Uupendra Limaye and Mukta Barve in the lead roles while Priya Berde, Vinay Apte and Kishor Kadam essay supporting roles.

The film bagged five awards at the national film awards for 2009 : National Film Award for Best Film on Social Issues, National Film Award for Best Actor : Upendra Limaye, National Film Award for Best Music Direction : Ajay Atul, National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer : Shreya Ghoshal for song "Jiv Rangla" , National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer: Hariharan for song "Jiv Rangla"
Amanush


Amanush is a 1975 Indian film made in both Hindi and Bengali produced and directed by Shakti Samanta. The film stars Sharmila Tagore, Uttam Kumar, Utpal Dutta and Asit Sen.The film was later remade in Telugu as "Edureeta" (1977) starring N.T.Rama Rao, Vanisri, and Jayasudha.

Harishchandrachi Factory - Special Screening at Huns Talkies on Sunday, 18th April 2010



A special screening of Harishchandrachi Factory, currently running at Huns Talkies, Belgaum, has been arranged for the members of Ajanta Film Society on Sunday, 18th April 2010 at 11.30 am.

Nominated as the Indian entry at the Oscars, the movie is currently making waves all over Maharashtra and other places in India where it has been screened.

The President of the Society, Sri. Mohan Karekar, and the Secretary, Sri. Subhash Chougule have appealed to the members to be present for the screening, which will be followed by a discussion.

The film is the story about the beginning of the Indian film industry, set in 1913, when two business partners fall out resulting in one leaving the company. As the family struggle to survive Phalke (Nandu Madhav) decides to make his own silent motion picture along with the support of his family.He travels to England to learn about the new medium and after he returns brings together a team of actors and technicians to produce his first film about the story of Raja Harishchandra. Through all the hard work the movie becomes a hit thus marking the beginning of one of the world's biggest film industry.


The film is a light comic entertainer which is well received by the common audience as well. It's light comic narration makes it an enjoyable movie.

It's Hitchcock and Iran this March

Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps and Majid Majidi's Iranian masterpiece, The Colors of Paradise will be the movies for discussion this weekend.

The countryside is magical, with fields full of colorful flowers, making Mohammad happy even though he cannot see them


The 39 Steps
The 39 Steps is a 1935 British thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, based on the adventure novel The Thirty-nine Steps by John Buchan. The film stars Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.

There have been four major film versions of the book. Hitchcock's original has been the most acclaimed, and remains so today: In 1999 it came 4th in a BFI poll of British films,[1] while in 2004 Total Film named it the 21st greatest British movie of all time

Italian Connection - Bicycle Thief and The Italian Job

The Bicycle Thief:
The Bicycle Thief (originally known as The Bicycle Thieves) is considered one of the all time classics of World cinema.. An absorbing film, the  story of a father and son and their adventures in search of their
stolen bicycle, it has appeal for people of all ages. . The film has been rated among the top 10 films of all time by different Film Institutes and Academies and is mandatory viewing and study at all film Institutes. It is a must watch for everyone.  
Duration (93 minutes) with English subtitles.

 

The Italian Job:
The Italian Job is a fast paced  film starring Michael Caine in one of the best performances of his career.
Charlie has just left prison, and now wants to do a 'big job'. The job is to steal $4m of gold arriving in Italy from China. Charlie's job needs financing, so he goes to Mr Bridger (a Mafia-type boss) who is in prison (Charlie has to break in !). In Italy, a clever plan is used to distract the authorities, while the raiders make their get-away in three Minis. This leads to an excellent car chase sequence through Italian streets, buildings, rivers, sewers, highways and rooftops which lasts for several minutes. 
Duration (96 minutes) with  English subtitles.

BBC Documentary Competition
Dear Sir/ Madam

I am a producer at the BBC and we came across your great blog and would like to tell you about a documentary competition that may be of interest to your readers.
We are asking our audiences world wide to submit short 2 minute documentaries about their lives. The project aims to find original stories with compelling personal narratives from each continent . We are very keen to hear from a diverse range of people and films can be in any language. Films can be shot using any kind of device. We have uploaded to our site some great entries from places such as Georgia, Venezuela and South Africa that were shot on mobile phones.
Our hope is to create a vivid and compelling picture of life in the world today. Up to 50 films will be broadcast by the BBC and we have some great judges selecting the films including Cara Mertes from the Sundance Film Festival and Oscar winning producer Greg Sanderson from BBC Storyville amongst others. In addition, there is HD Sony camera equipment on offer to the director of the best judged film.
We think this is a very exciting project for emerging film makers - the films will be seen by a worldwide audience of over 100 million!

"ROMAN HOLIDAY" at 5.30 pm on Saturday, 30th January 2010 at Lokmanya Hall, Bhagyanagar


Roman Holiday, a romantic comedy Classic film starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn, will be screened at  5.30 pm on Saturday, 30th January, 2010 at Lokmanya Hall, Bhagyanagar, Belgaum. It was nominated for seven Oscar Awards and won three. Audrey Hepburn won the Academy Award for "Best Actress" for this film, her first American film. The American Film Institute has named the film as the fourth best love story of all time.
